Fear…Not!!

by Bob Hamp | Blog Posts | 7 Comments »

We often think that the opposite of fear is courage.  If we want to get really spiritual, we say the opposite of fear is faith.  Ironically, neither of these is a truly biblical answer.

Here is what the Bible says:

1 John 4:  Perfect Love casts out fear

2 Timothy 1:7  God has not given us a spirit of Fear, but He has given us power and Love and a sound mind.

Catch it?  The opposite of fear is Love.  I would like to point out two things about this:

1.  This is true because if an all-powerful God loves us, what could possibly over-power Him to harm us.

2.  If the antidote for fear is faith, or courage, the antidote originates from us.  Since Love is the solution, it issues forth from Him.

next time you feel fear creeping in on you, instead of trying to work up your courage, or recite words of faith, ask God how He feels about you.

  1. Wow, even on Jetlag you rock. Amazing. I can hardly talk much less write something inspiring.

  2. Hmmmmm. This is thought-provoking stuff, Bob! It makes me think through some of the practical ramifications of Love overcoming fear…

Fear the economy? Love generously and tangibly.

Fear failure? Love encouragingly and help someone struggling.

Fear risk? Love mightily and trust Father to lead.

Fear death? Love living fully for Him while you have breath.

The application of love as a verb is a powerful motivator and foundation for overcoming fear.

  3. bob, this is also the central tenet in the “Course in Miracles”.
And in Peace Pilgrim walking 30,000 miles replacing fear with love….It is an ever new, ever present, newly discovered, and yet always elusive, ever commanding message…and Anthony is right on…the application of love , loving, is a powerful foundation. As a noun, it is powerful reason to turn to God and listen, and soak it in..

  4. I’ve always wondered about the balance between this side of fear and the fear of for example Ecclesiastes 12:13 “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.” Perhaps a better understanding of this type of fear is to reverence God? We know that fearing God has promises, e.g., Prov 9:10 “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom” and Prov 1:7 “The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge” The fear of God is a secure fortress (Prov 14:26), prolongs days (Prov 10:27), is a fountain of life (Prov 14:27), teaches wisdom (Prov 15:33), and is praiseworthy (Prov 31:30). Interestingly, the fear of God is to hate evil (Prov 8:13). (See also 2Cor 5:11, 7:1; Eph 5:21; 1Tim 5:20; 1Pet 2:17). Like much of the whole counsel of God I think there is a healthy balance somewhere between fearing and loving God. I don’t think they are mutually exclusive at all. What are your thoughts on this?

  5. Michael, great thoughts…without a doubt striking a balance is important. I always think of fearing God as giving HIm the rightful place of power, authority, immensity in your life. Since He occupies those psotions anyway, acknowledging this with your will lines you up rightly wiht every other facet of life. Like saying to the Earth, “give the Sun the rightful place at the center of your solar system”, giving God the rightful place of omnipotence allows everything else to fnction rightly in your soul andin your experience. Well said sir!!

  6. Anthony, I love this…very practical and potent in the same breath. Sounds like you and God have had some conversation about this!!

  7. I hate to admit it, but I wrote the last few before I left, and had Jillian post them for me, I had to wait a few days to respond to you because I was on Jet lag!! Thanks DW
